I think it is a bit too good, compared to Bless Army. Though it is more expensive, and requires higher level. Bumping it to caster-level 7 at least (thereby requiring Major Sphere access), is a good first step.

Divine spells should, on average, be slightly better but narrower than Arcane spells.
1) You cannot extend your reach via leylines
2) You are far more limited in the # you can take

There should be counters to what are essentially un-counterable spells.

Don't forget too, the Priest would have to pre-cast the spell, in anticipation of Defection/Subversion. If you don't defect/subvert, it is strictly inferior to Bless Army.

So you can't cast it on allready defected units to get rid of the defection?

You cannot, it is a preventative spell, not post-effect spell. You'd need to cast Dispel to remove Defection.

Duration: 1 Action/3 Levels
You impact 1 unit per level. Units are immune to Defection/Subversion, and gain +2 melee. All units must be in the province you are casting this spell from. You cannot cast this spell after a unit has been defected/subverted, to break the effect.

I agree. It adds tactically interesting requirements. Did my enemy pre-cast Courage? Do they even have access to it? Do I dare risk casting Defection when it may fizzle?

I'd only comment that Courage feels more like Combat and Army more like War. I'd flip the Spheres required if you are trying to narrow spells to 1 sphere instead of both being of both spheres.

Otherwise - 9/10 Defection is just the only and obvious answer to everything. If it is always the best answer - it is too good - or there is no situation where it isn't reasonably good - and that is bad design.

So would it be possible to have a contingency if they cast defection I cast Haelyns Courage first?

Contingencys are kinda weird and Just want to make sure.

Maybe if a) you beat their initiative and b) you have a temple of the appropriate level in the province in question. So, maybe possible defensively, probably not possible offensively? Not really sure you would know they are casting the spell though, so I'm not sure how you would know that the trigger is being pulled.
