One thing that could be considered that each time you leave a faith the provinces you own get a loyalty hit. If your a nonelanded regent this would not work and I dont think a none landed leaving a faith should trigger loyalty drop in provinces with temples as this could be abused.

The Gods are new and weak and derive their power from their faithful. Until we have faiths actually established with actual miracles being cast, I think joining and leaving should be very flexible. These new faiths aren't as sacred as the old ones were...yet.

The only reason to have any restrictions is for meta-game reasons, not for verisimilitude reasons.

1 turn per tier of the faith simulates, in my view, the growing power of the Gods as they get stronger, making them able to resist your abandoning them. The weaker they are, the less they are able to punish you for your switching.

Is the faith tier recalculated after I withdraw my lvl x shrine? And if so, before or after the ‘punishment’?

Also, does your shrine supporting a faith automatically make you a worshipper of that faith?

If you are a Priest, yes. Otherwise, no.

I think "after" the cooldown, makes sense. The God is able to hold on to your Shrine support while you transition away from them.

The people would still be upset, even if the gods didnt.

The gods in our world arguably dont affect anything, but go in and tell one of the more religious nations that they not should worship another god and.. well ;)

The only reason they started following the religion in the first place is because their leader told them to. If the leader who told them "Hey, we should listen to these guys!" then says "Hey, wait -- they're bad dudes. Stop listening to them!" it also makes sense that they wouldn't be upset because the were just going along with their leader in the first place and their real faith is in their leader and not the religion.

If it's to stop meta changing for the bonuses just put a delay on when you get the religion's bonus when you switch.

Also, Birthright, like most settings has always been pantheistic. All the gods are worshipped, (or appeased) by everyone. Individuals who choose a patron god, don't stop recognizing other gods' existence.

The closest real-life corollary would be patron saints. If St George was replaced as the patron Saint of England, wouldn't change the day-to-day, everyone would still go to the same churches, and pray to the same saints they always did.

Mostly... I'm pretty sure the Vos gods and the Anuirean gods are effectively blocked out by the opposite party. Less extreme for the others, though. And they still recognize their opponents exist, they just discuss them contemptuously.
