Without this new priest defense magic, it would not be possible that one army can ignore all wizards and conquer all with force in a few turns- one example about unbalancing the game- and the joy of most conquered players.

Priest defense magic? They are talking the wizard subversion spell.

And any army can be stopped --- if there are people willing to stand against it and not just add to it's power.

The price of freedom is not paid for with flowers and rainbows :)

If they had pre cast the anti subversion spell, it is pretty obvious this conversation would not have come up...

What if the rainbows in question happen to form a very hypnotic pattern?

Those are special rainbows, probably from whatever is being ingested/smoked locally!

Yeah, flowers and rainbows CAN be the price of freedom, but they'd better be some exceptionally nasty flowers and outrageously trippy rainbows.

I don't see how 'Subversion is a better Defection' when Subversion only allows you to give units a single instruction (where you can't even control how they carry it out) while Defection lets you use the units as if they were your own for an extended period.

#3 seems to be the best match for my interpretation. I don't think it's a big deal, as Subversion is a level-1 spell... it shouldn't be the keystone of anyone's strategy, it should be a light touch where the defender isn't sure whether resistance is worth the effort, that can be used creatively to produce unexpected effects.

It is better in some regards (can affect far more troops) and worse in others (can be bid against).

Agreed it should not be the cornerstone/lynchpin of a defense.

Subversion also has interesting applications like, if used during neutral times it looks like the other regent did the action.
